The soil respiration chamber is an opaque cylinder with gas inlets and outlets to allow respiration measurements to be made from the soil surface. This chamber has a diameter of 4 inches (10.16 cm) and a volume of 1.0 L. This chamber is designed to connect to a collar (or collars) which have been placed in the soil using the sharpened end.
This chamber has a 20 cm length of micro capillary tube attached to the top of the chamber, to release pressure from the system, without allowing gas diffusion in or out during an experiment. The chamber also has a gas manifold inside, which helps disperse the incoming gas throughout the chamber.
The 2 included collars should only be inserted completely into the soil. This allows the gas manifold to be positioned on top of the soil, without causing compression of the soil.
Extra collars (G180b) are available for a cost of $75 US each. All collars are identical in size and can be used with any G180 Soil Chamber.
Qubit also sells a Soil Chamber (G118) that fits directly in the soil, without the use of collars. This soil chamber has a bevelled edge which is used to pierce the soil during measurements.
