SOIL CHAMBER

SOIL CHAMBER

The soil respiration chamber is an opaque cylinder with gas inlets and outlets to allow respiration measurements to be made from the soil surface. This chamber has a diameter of 4 inches (10.16 cm) and a volume of 1.0 L. This chamber is designed to penetrate the soil surface using the bevelled (sharpened) end of the chamber and should sit directly in the soil providing a seal between the chamber and the soil.

This chamber has a 20 cm length of microcapillary tube attached to the top of the chamber, to release pressure from the system, without allowing gas diffusion in or out during an experiment. The chamber also has a gas manifold inside, which helps disperse the incoming gas throughout the chamber. This chamber should only be inserted 0.75 inches (1.9 cm), which positions the gas intake manifold on top of the soil, without causing compression of the soil.

Qubit also sells a Soil Chamber (G180) that fits onto collars which can be placed in the soil in advance, to avoid disturbing the soil before making a measurement.
