POTOMETER

POTOMETER

The Potometer may be used by itself or in conjunction with Qubit's S161 Humidity and Temperature Sensor to measure changes in plant transpiration rate as environmental and physiological conditions change. Pressure changes can be used to monitor relative rates of water uptake and the sensor can be calibrated to relate such pressure changes to absolute rates of water uptake.

The Potometer comes with flexible vinyl tubing of two different diameters. One end of a sealed vinyl tube is attached to the instrument, the other end to the cut stem of a plant. The tube contains an air bubble in contact with the Potometer and an unbroken column of water in contact with the cut end of the plant stem. The air bubble expands as the plant stem draws the water up the tube. The S181 Absolute Pressure Sensor in the Potometer monitors the reduction in pressure within the air bubble. The Potometer can also be configured for measurement of root pressure.
